 "not for nikon D5000" 2009-09-30

"OPTEKA Battery Grip for the NIKON D5000" 2009-09-21
By Danny Reasons (Little Rock Arkansas)
I did a lot of research before I purchased this item, however; there were no reviews on it as it relates to the D5000. The only thing I could ever find is the manufacturer claiming that it fits the D5000 or someone elses review of it for a different camera (D40/D60.)

I'm just getting back into the SLR frame of mind for photo's and I knew a battery grip was one thing I wanted. The lack of a NIKON grip for the D5000 nearly kept me from purchasing the camera but the D5000 was really a great entry into the dslr arena, so I bought it and the OPTEKA battery grip.

The OPTEKA grip does fit the NIKON D5000 but it's not a perfect fit. The "tray" that the bottom of the camera is nestled in when they go together is just "slightly" larger than the bottom of the camera. A person who isn't a camera entheuiast probably wouldn't notice and from a small distance it's not noticable but things like this usually bother me! Don't get me wrong, it's not a loose fit, the grip fits tight and there is no slop, it's just that the small raised lip around the top edge of the grip is "slightly" larger then the bottom of the camera! It's not really an issue but consumers need to know this because this may bother some people! The outer demensions of the grip are virtually identical to the outer demensions of the camera and the look and finish of the grip are pretty much spot on!

When you hold it, it feels similar to the D5000. It appears to have a similar build quaiity to the camera body. It doesn't add any significant weight to the camera except for you now have two batteries instead of one. This product also comes with a battery cradle that holds six double A batteries so if you get in a pinch you can buy new batteries virtually anywhere! I havn't tried this out yet!

I was also worried about taking off the cameras battery door to install the grip but that was very easy, it just snapped right out! They even have a slot in the grip for you to put the battery door in so you don't lose it!

Installation was a breeze. You just gently remove the camera battery door (instructions come with grip) and slide the electronic contacts (male) into the battery receptacle (female.) Then you turn a thumbwheel that turns a bolt (1/4") that screws into the area on the bottom of the camera where you usually attach a tripod and you're done. It's a tight solid fit and it all feels like one piece! The grip also has an area on the bottom of it where you can attach a tripod (1/4".) It all feels very good in my hands!

After about a month of use I highly recommend this product for anyone who has a D5000. Overall the benefits of this product far outweigh the fact that it may actually have been produced and intended for a "slightly" larger camera. It is a wonderful product that I am very happy with and it adds to my enjoyment of my D5000.

I can't comment on the vertical shutter release as I personally have no interest in this feature as of yet.

fit..............................9 of 10

looks.........................10 of 10

ease of assembally.......10 of 10

operational value.........10 of 10 (don't have to change betteries as often.)

value for the $..........10 of 10 (if NIKON made one it would cost much more.)

hope this helps someone.

Once I figured it out then it works but it does not work when your lighting is not prestine. On another note, first level customer support needs more tact with dealing with customers. Another person called me to sort out an earlier review that I filed regarding the shoddy customer service.

 "Lots of battery life" 2009-06-01
By James L. Guidangen
Doubles the battery life with the extra EN-EL9. Balances the weight of the D40/D40x/D60 that sports an over-sized lens.

The cons. Plastic build feels cheap, is not flush with the D40/D40x/D60's plastic build. The vertical shutter release is IR; meaning that every time you want to shot with the vertical shutter release, you must go into the menu and set it to IR. Moreover, that means you cannot burst shoot and cannot half-hold down the release as you did with the top shutter release.

"Opteka Battery Grip on a Nikon D60" 2009-04-24
By H. Tan (Ringoes, NJ United States)
Just received my Opteka Battery Grip today. It was ordered thru 47th Street Photo and arrived 6 days before the estimated arrival date. Awesome! Surprisingly the 2 batteries it came with were 1400mAh (2800mAh altogether, WOOHOO!) instead of the advertised 1200mAh. Just right off the bat, the experience is headed for a good start.

Installation was very easy. The battery grip even came with an illustrated instruction on how to remove the battery door. Bottom-line, open the door 45 degrees and slide the door out. The battery compartment has a slot where you can slide the battery door and it holds it in snugly. The battery grip gets screwed into the tripod mount and needs a slight tweak as you're tightening the screw so it fit snugly. I have to say, they're mounted together pretty good and tight (a good tight).

The battery compartment slides out of the side and I have the option of using either the 2 EN-EL9 batteries or 6 AAs. Even with the two batteries, the body doesn't feel that heavy. I have the Nikon 18-200mm AF-S DX f/3.5-5.6 lens so the addition of the battery grip balances the appearance of the camera. I have to admit, since this is a big lens, it is still heavier than the body with battery grip and 2 batteries, so the lens would tilt the camera forward. (Just an added piece of information in case you have this lens, doesn't really affect my opinion of the battery grip).

The appearance of the battery grip complements the body of the D60. The crackle finish of the camera can also be found on the grip. Even the lines at the bottom of the camera is complemented by the battery grip giving the appearance that they were meant for each other.

The battery feels comfortable and my pinky doesn't have to bend at the bottom of the camera (pre-battery grip). The right side of the camera and grip can now rest against my palm. My other palm can support the bottom of the battery grip giving more room for the fingers to rotate the zoom/focus.

The vertical shutter button is a nice feature. I may use it from time-to-time, but it definitely requires 1) switching the vertical release shutter to "On"; 2) popping out the infrared-sensor from the battery grip; 3) pressing the "Fn" button and selecting the "Quick-Response Remote" option. I had to do a one-time setup in the D60 that programs the Fn button (go to Menu->Custom Setting Menu->11. Timer/Fn button->Select "Release Mode"). After this one-time setup, I just have to invoke 1-2-and-3 above to activate the vertical shutter. One thing that takes getting used to is there's no half-step when pressing the vertical release button so the camera focuses, then snaps the picture. Just catches you off-guard initially.

Overall, while I was initially skeptical and contemplating between this and the Targus (I can't comment on the Targus since I didn't order it) I'd have to say I'm very happy with this battery grip and it definitely gives the D60 a whole new appearance, added battery life and ergonomic benefit. In my opinion it definitely does not make the camera "cheesy-looking".

"A superb wide-angle lens for full-frame (FX) Nikon digital cameras" 2009-07-14
By 320Flyer (Minnetonka, MN USA)
I purchased this lens along with my D700 nearly 12 months ago. My choice was between this lens and the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S. I went with the 17-35mm for the ability to use filters and have not looked back.

During that time I have had a blast enjoying landscape photography with the combination. The lens is exceedingly sharp --corner to corner-- particularly when stopped down from wide open. I have no use for 'prime' lenses within this focal range anymore.

Indoors the extreme angle-of-view and large aperture have been great for candids and other interior shots. Obviously, 17-35mm is not a desirable focal length for portraits.

Some have complained about corner 'sharpness' wide open, but the depth-of-field at f/2.8 is so shallow on FX that corner sharpness is a non-issue since objects in the corner are unlikely to be within the focal plane of the subject anyway. With the high-ISO performance of the D700, aperture selection is an artistic choice for DOF, not a necessity for low light. Stop the pixel-peeping and just enjoy the lens!

I have also found DxO Optics Pro (Elite) a priceless software tool with this camera/lens combination. I always shoot RAW images and use DxO to convert to TIFF or jpg. DxO includes both the D700 and this lens in their database; the result: noise-free images with perfect optical corrections. Amazing.

"Extremely sharp, high quality images" 2009-06-28
By W. T. Rogers (Chesterfield, MO USA)
This is a superb lens. I purchased it along with my D700 and the results have been very impressive. It's very well made; the zoom control is linear (evenly spaced on the zoom ring), and it's not as heavy as I thought it would be given the pro level of construction. Its a nice chunky size ... it fits my hand well, and is well suited size-wise to the D700 ... yet doesn't feel too big or heavy. I've been using it mostly on a tripod for landscape photography, but I think it will also be a great walking-around lens.

The included lens shade is pretty much worthless and is so wide physically that its a PITA in my backpack. The lens also comes with a beautiful hard case which I will never use. It would have been nice if Nikon had shaved $50-100 off the price and skipped this high quality but impractical part of the package.

Highly recommended!

 "I received a Dud!!" 2008-03-31
By NJ
Check the quality control of this lens when you buy. Mine had severe front focus problems. Even when i selected the auto focus sensor the lens still had focusing issues . The lens was soft to F4. At F2.8 the images were incredibly poor. In my 20+ years of photography i have never seen a lens this bad. To make sure, i borrowed a friends 18-55VR. This $200.00 lens had better color saturation, contrast and accurate auto focus. Not only that, but it was sharper. To get the 17-35 as sharp, i had to stop down to F8. I tried to get another sample but they were out of stock, so i just returned it. I know a lot of people rate this lens 5 stars, and i understand that ever now and then you get a bad sample, but this lens had multiple problems. On the positive side, it is not as big and heavy as some people claim. It balances well on my D200, and the autofocus is fast. I will be looking into the 24-70 2.8.

 "First Class Glass" 2008-02-28
By Fred Stevens (Portales, New Mexico)
This is a first-class professional quality lens. I am using it on Nikon F5, F100, and D200 bodies. I bought it in anticipation of purchasing an FX digital format successor to the D200/D300 DX-format cameras. It is extremely sharp from edge-to-edge, rendering crisp images with great color and contrast. Good low-light performance for natural people-pictures. On my film-based shoots, it is nothing short of spectacular. With digital, I am presently using DX-format cameras, so the focal-length range is reduced. But, when used with an FX-format digital, I expect equally exceptional results. This lens is considered both heavy and pricey by some. However, I find the weight promotes better stability with hand-held images. The price is right for what you get. I also like a depth of field indicator on the aperature ring for doing wide-ange shots employing hyper-focal distance techniques. You don't get this with the newer g-series lenses. If you can afford this lens and are going to go FX-format, buy it.

"Great product and the VERY BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE on the net" 2009-09-11
By Upstatepano (Liberty, SC USA)
After having purchased several "cheapo" wireless remotes from eBay a Flickr forum member recommended the Satechi WR-B100. I ordered the item and received it in 2 days. I did a quick test with it and everything seemed to work great, was in a rush. Looking at it a little later I realized that something was wrong, it was not the exact same item as I had ordered. I called Satechi, yes a live body answered. The very friendly lady ask me to email a picture of the item I had received and to explain the difference, which I did right a way (this was late in the day). I received an email the very next morning explaining that the item had been updated and I had been shipped the old version. They said the correct item had been re-shipped already and a prepaid return label would be in the box to return the old item. Received the correct item in 2 days. I tested the item and it is better than advertised. I fired the camera from 2 rooms away, NOT in line of sight. I went through 3 rooms and out into the back yard and it fired the camera (shooting brackets of 5 shots), through an all brick house. Now I will probably never need this feature but it is nice to know that it will do it.

I have never had such great service where they accepted that they made a mistake and corrected it without making me return the other item first, no extra cost incurred by me. The item far exceeded my expectations and the price is very reasonable.

 "Does its job" 2009-08-24
By Koi Garden Guy (Seattle, WA)
I purchased this remote for a D300. It works great.

I have not tested the remote distance but it works as far as I will be able to use it.

I also use it to trigger the picture from the receiver in order to remove the need to touch the camera/tripod at all. Both methods work find. Because of the dual use, the receiver cord is long enough to get in the way. The solution I have used is a velcro wrap to keep the receiver and cord from being too cumbersome when you do not want the full extension.

I am presently trying to figure a way to use this remote while using the "bulb" exposure functionality (one click to open shutter, one click to close it) for long exposures. Presently I have to use the receiver rather than the remote to accomplish this. I will update this review when/if I learn more

"Cheaply Made But Does The Job" 2008-09-25
By W. R. Stockstill Jr. (Marietta, GA United States)
I used this with my Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) to take some family photos that I would be in. My first impression was how cheap it was. Its made of flimsy hard plastic that you are afraid you will break. After figuring out what needs to be charged (the part that attaches to the camera) it took some wiggling before a connection was made and the lights indicated it was charging. The remote has a battery that is included. The remote has a couple of slide settings and it took me some experimenting to figure out what worked with the D300. When I started taking photos it did not work until I wiggled the slider. I did get pictures with it. I was about 20 feet away, I think it is supposed to work up to 300 feet away but I have not tried it. So, yes, it works, but don't expect Nikon quality and be prepared to jiggle the slider to get a connection.

 "Excellent wireless remote!" 2008-08-14
By 4travelman (Portland, OR USA)
I bought the WR-100B in May 2008 and used it on several shoots (about 300 shots). I used it with a wireless Nikon SB-600 flash off camera in commander mode and covered the camera viewfinder from light. The receiver is a little big but it's no problem to just let it dangle from the socket. The connector is very tight from the receiver to the D300 with no alignment markings. After a few connections the receiver connector fits fine. I prefer it a little tight rather than loose. The transmitter was used for some focusing but the camera fired off everytime with this transmitter remote. No problems at all. The antenna on the transmitter is a pull out metal rod to give extra distance to the remote. After a four or five hours, I got sloppy and put the transmitter in my pocket and it broke off. The transmitter continued to work fine without the antenna for at least 30 ft. which was OK. I called and emailed Satechi about fixing the antenna. They were very responsive and gave me instructions for mailing the transmitter back to them. Within a week including all mailings I received a completely new unit (I mean, receiver, transmitter, and charger) in a new unit box. I was overwhelmed. I had never had anyone give me a new product for a minor problem (may have been easier to just mail a new one than fix the antenna). No charges were applied (other than my cost of postage of $1.68 to mail the transmitter back to them). So, the service was outstanding and the product works as advertised extremely well. Other than the few minor annoyances indicated above I would have to say this is a company that appreciates its customers and produces/distributes a quality product. I highly recommend. It's not perfect but it does what I want with no major problems and I can count on backup service if I need it.

"Better than Nikon's Lens Pen" 2009-01-06
By Richard L. Mardis (Oklahoma City, OK USA)
I purchased to use with my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K. This great camera has a body that's nearly impossible not to get fingerprints on the LCD. The DigiKlear worked great to clean the LCD. It's amazing how it's self-replenishing and cleans without the need for a spray cleaner or cloth. After using the DigiKlear, I covered the LCD with an Invisible Shield by Zagg which is the best screen protector I've found. The LensPen is also great and it is so much better than Nikon's Lens Pen. I haven't yet used the cleaning kit but I'm sure it will come in handy. I purchased this combination kit since it was cheaper than buying the items individually. I would have given it 5 stars if it had come with a small case to keep all the items organized. I suggest that they create a cloth case with pliable plastic pockets that rolls up such as a wrench set that has a string to bundle it up. But that might have made it more expensive. I'm hoping the Tamrac bag I ordered will be able to keep these items safe & organized for when I need to use them. The two pens would have cost much more to purchase individually so it's like getting the cleaning kit for free.

you could buy all of these items separately but this package really does it all. It is a great combo.

The only reason it gets 4 not 5 stars is that it would really be nice if it came with a carry case of some kind, but that would probably add to the price.

The Lens Pens are great and having the 2 different shapes for the lenses and the screens helps out.

 "Awesome starter DSLR" 2009-05-31
By Dj Chris (Tri Valley,CA)
I bought mine last year, and it's a good starter DSLR especially if your transitioning from point and shoot to a DSLR. I got the D60 kit with the 18-55 VR Lens. Pair it up with the SB-600 speed flash and your good to go!. One thing about it (and I won't give one less star becuase of this) is I was hoping for the camera to have a built in motor because it was hard to find lenses that have a built in motor to focus, not like the D80.

But overall, AWESOME camera!

 "Nice cam." 2009-05-11

I haven't had time to use this much since I received it, but Amazon would like a review, so here it it.

I like it. I need the 10 megs for the postprocessing work that I often do. Can't wait to take it out for an extended time of shooting.

"Refurbished from Cameta the way to go!!" 2009-05-01
By Avishek Aiyar (Atlanta, GA)
I just received this camera today. I am new to SLR photography, but I am already in love with this camera.

I got a great deal on this camera body + the 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR lens from Cameta Camera. They advertise it as refurbished, but there is absolutely no way to tell it from a new camera.

My experience with Cameta has easily been one of the best. I placed the order on Monday evening and then had a change of mind. I called them up the next day and they accommodated my change without any hesitations. And in less than 2 days time, the camera is at my door-front with all items as promised!

I am yet to test out the camera, but would be very surprised if I found anything wrong.

I am definitely going back to Cameta when I decide to get my next set of lens.

 "D60 for an amateur" 2009-01-30
By Darren T. Wagner (Lancaster, PA USA)
I'm not a professional by any means. I merely needed a good step up from a compact point-and-shoot camera.

Every photographer has reached that ceiling of the p/s camera, and I wanted to be able to do more things and take better quality photos than I had been. I'm getting into wedding photography, and I needed something practical for that. A compact p/s camera just DOES NOT suffice.

I'm really excited about this camera. Its more camera than I ever thought I would own--I just got interested in photography about 2 years ago, when I bought a $45 digital Polaroid. The pictures that I have taken with it so far have been great. I purchased the Nikon 18-55mm lens at the same time, and now I have purchased the Sigma 70-300mm to 'complete' my outfit. I'm like a kid at Christmas time--I can't put it down!

Like I said, I'm no professional, I'm just an artist. I just enjoy exploring photography on my own and discovering things. Take it or leave it.
