"High Quality Lens With Minor Drawbacks" 2009-10-16
By Philip Arthur (Barbados)
The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor wide angle zoom lens is the new standard for all wide angle lenses to be graded by for years to come. Fast auto-focus, very sharp images throughout the frame even when wide open, less distortion that any other wide angle on the market and the continuous aperture of 2.8 throughout the zoom range makes this and excellent lens for low light photography.

It is perfect for wide landscape shots and close up shots as well as you can get fairly close to your subject and still focus. Take note there will be very noticeable distortion the closer you are to the subject, which can also be used for a desired effect.

If you are considering this lens take note that it was designed for full frame cameras like the D3x, D3s, D3 and the D700. You can still use it on a DX model camera but with the crop factor ratio it won't be as wide.

Nothing in life is perfect and this lens follows suit. The bulging lens maybe an issue for some users who aren't as careful with their equipment. The problem being that it protrudes outwards and exposes the lens which cannot use a UV filter to protect it. So you have to be extra careful, as you should be with any expensive piece of camera equipment. Take note this also means all other forms of screw on filters cannot be used on this lens.

The lens seems like an after thought, or as though very little consideration went into it. Some users say it falls off easily but that has not been my experience. Though after constant use it is possible that it may become loose over time.

At 2.2 pounds this is no light weight. For those photographers use to heavy and expensive lenses, or people who work out often it shouldn't be an issue. For those who like to travel light, staying away from this lens may be a good option. Though with the quality images you can create using it you may want to reconsider not making the purchase and lugging it along with your other gear.

The final issue is the price. Unfortunately it currently just under US $2000 to purchase one and the price will only go up for a premium lens like this. So if you are on the fence about getting it and can see great potential use for it, now is the time as it will be soon about the US $2000 mark. If however you don't have the cash and it won't make it out of your camera bag very often you may want to look the other way.

This lens lives up to all it's hype and expectations, so when you purchase and put it to use be prepared to be amazed. Like any great tool it is only as good as it's user, so be sure to master your photography skills and put this gem to use.

 "excellent, but pricy" 2009-09-29
By Sci fi fan from Atlanta
The lens gives excellent pictures as you would hope for something that costs as much as this. The build quality is excellent as well. A professional lens that lives up to your expectations. I found two problems with it that you might want to keep in mind if you're thinking about buying one. First, it is big and heavy. This might seem obvious, but if you're carrying it around all day you will notice the weight difference between this and something like the 18 - 200 zoom. Second, the bulging front element can be a problem. There isn't any way to get a filter on it, and it is easily bumped with greasy sweaty fingers. I was making a real effort to avoid it, and while taking pictures in south Florida I still managed to get a fingerprint on it. I removed the fingerprint with the same solution I used to clean the sensor, but this is still a big delicate vulnerable chunk of glass sticking out for things to bump.

"Sharp, fast, with minimal perspective distortion" 2009-07-20
By R. L. Whalen (Cambridge, MA)
I have been using this lens on a D700, and one of its best characteristics is how well it functions at wide angles with minimal distortion. There is little evidence of perspective, pincushion, or barrel distortion. Vertical lines stay that way, and this lens is great for interior pictures. It is big, heavy, and not designed to be used with filters, whether for effect or protection of the front element. It's clearly the best wide angle zoom lens I have tried.

 "The ultra-wide of choice" 2009-07-07
By Busy Executive (Long Island, NY)
Others have written extensively about the wonderful optics behind the 14-24 zoom, and I would agree. The sharpness is beyond amazing, even wide open, and it's really hard to find an optical flaw in this lens, period. It is that good.

On the other hand, there are a few challenges to this sort of lens. First, it is rather large and heavy, and can feel a bit unbalanced on some of Nikon's smaller DSLRs. A D300 with battery grip feels about right, as would the D700/D3/D3x or similar. And really, to fully appreciate the performance this type of lens can deliver, you want an FX sensor camera: D700, D3 or D3x. On DX, ultra-wide sort of becomes wide, but not wide enough.

Others have mentioned the other gotchas: the protruding (and very expensive looking) front element, and the inability to use any type of filter to protect said element. I tend to protect my lenses anyway, but it does make me a bit paranoid knowing that I might be one bump away from doing my expensive lens serious damage.

The bulk impacts me in another way. Wanting the same high performance out of the rest of my lenses, I find myself carrying the 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 and two camera bodies. Add a macro lens, a flash or two...well, it's like 20 pounds of gear. Makes you understand how much suffering you'll do for your art.

Of course, this is a bit of a special purpose product, so if you're buying one, make sure you know what you're getting and why you want it. If you do, you'll love every obese ounce of glass and metal, and be rewarded with incredible images.
