The Tokina AT-X 124 AF PRO DX lens is Tokina's first lens designed with an APS-C sized sensor. This lens gives the Digital Photographer an ultra wide-angle zoom lens that has the equivalent of an 18-36mm zoom range on a 35mm film camera while maintaining a bright constant aperture of f/4. Non-rotating 77mm filter threads mean special effect filters will not change when the lens' focus is changed. Fast internal focusing with Tokina's One-Touch focus clutch mechanism allows the lens to AF focus faster and switching between auto and manual focus is as easy as snapping the focus ring back and forth. 2 sharp-cut aspherical elements accurately correct aspherical aberration usually associated with ultra-wide angle lenses. Bright, constant f/4 aperture allows plenty of light to enter the camera for shooting in a wide variety of photographic situations. A chrome-plated brass mount plate and all-metal zoom unit can stand up to regular use, while an advanced polycarbonate outer lens barrel reduces the weight of the lens, making it a pleasure to carry. Dimensions - 3.3 x 3.5 (84x89.5mm) Weight - 20.1 ounces (570 grams)

The lens was for my wife's Nikon D90. She is very happy with it. The only problem she had was when she first put it on the camera she was able to put it on upside down. At first we thought the lens was defective but discovered the mistake on closer examination. She has added a polarizing filter which looks a little awkward to adjust when the lens hood is attached. Also she has bumped the lens hood a couple of times while hiking and had it pop off. It easily snaps back on but it would have been better if it was a little more secure. The lens itself has provided impressive pictures.

I am in school studying photography so I pay real close attention to the quality of the products I buy as I am sure most of you have notices, are not cheap. For the most part I have found Nikon to be second to none when making glass with only a possible exception to Lieca, but in the 12-24 F/4 lens class I would have to give it to Takina who just out right made a fantastic lens.
I really like the sturdy construction and focusing ring gives a good grip. It feels solid in the hands and does not flex like some brands do. This lens is ready for battle. Once you get to the field it blows away the competition with incredible detail, contrast and sharpness. If that's not enough to make other brands surrender, the fact that it does all this at about half the price of the big boys (Nikon & Canon) should it once and for all.
The one area where I do think they do win is only in the auto focus speed, though will not say it's slow, is not up to its first party versions. My thoughts on this are "Who cares?" I don't find it fast focusing at this range to be important. 24-70, 70-200 range lenses it is more of a factor to consider.
I am very lucky that I can rent and try out stuff before I buy and that gives me a real advantage when making purchasing decisions. If you have access to a large camera store where you can try this lens out, I would suggest you do so as I think you will fall in love with it the first time you use it. If not, just buy the lens anyways. You will also fall in love; will just take an extra day or two while it is in the mail to get to you. Happy Shooting

If there were other options for a 12-24mm lens, I'd rate this one lower. I just returned from a trip taking about 2,000 photos. This is an excellent lens for interiors of large churches, facades and expansive landscapes. But, on my D70 I often could not get it to auto-focus in order to take the shot. I missed a number of great shots because of this. It might be an issue with my camera, but my 28-300mm Tamron had no problems. I do like the ability to pull the focus ring towards the body to enable Manual focus, and that saved some shots - but only after 5-10 seconds of trying to allow the camera to focus itself. Otherwise, no problems to speak of. This lens spec coupled with the 28-300mm would be all I'd recommend if traveling light.

never i thought tokina would produce such a quality product. after reading many positive review, i decided to give it a try.

I found that the performance and build quality of this lens are both excellent - especially for the price. But be aware that there are compatibility issues using the Nikon SB-600 Speedlight (and probably the SB-800). Mounted on my D300, the auto zoom (that sync's the Speedlight zoom to the lens) and the auto focus illuminator (AF-ILL) do not work. Those Speedlight functions do work with my Nikon lenses. The auto focus illumination is important to me. If I had known about this, I probably would have spent the extra money on a Nikon lens.
