Bought my Satechi TR-M Timer Remote Control directly from the Satechi website. Their website indicates that this unit is also compatible with the Nikon D5000, as well as the D90. However, the plug on my unit looks different than the one pictured here on Amazon. Mine is a "straight" plug, instead of a "right-angle" plug. If you own a D5000 you may want to verify with Satechi and/or Amazon, to see if the one Amazon is selling is compatible with the Nikon D5000.
Needing a remote timer/trigger that I could use while standing BEHIND my D5000, as well as having the need (astrophotography) to be able to keep the shutter open for more than the meager 30 seconds the onboard D5000 timer limits you to, I decided to purchase this unit. Out of the box, the unit has worked perfectly.
The build quality is definitely not that of a well machined metallic unit, however it is nonetheless quite sturdy, for being made out of ABS plastic. Obviously, as any twerp knows, if it were machined out of metal, it would be nowhere near the affordable $60+ pricetag. Questions about the security of the battery cover have proven unfounded to me. It is definitely "lightweight" without the batteries installed. However, when you insert the two AAA batteries (provided), the unit feels a bit more "beefier" in the hand.
The display is definitely of a readable size for my older eyes, and the operation of the unit becomes more intuitive after the first few uses. The documentation, while somewhat anorexic, still gives a good description of all the readouts and associated buttons. It also indicates the settings you need to apply to your camera, in order for this unit to work at it's full capability:
Exposure Mode - M (Manual)
Shutter Speed - BULB
Camera Onboard Interval Timer - OFF
Focus Mode - AUTO-FOCUS or MANUAL
Single/Continuous - S (Single frame)
At settings other than these, it appears the unit works as a simple shutter release.
For interval/timed exposures, simply program the unit with the desired delay time, exposure time, interval time, and number of intervals, and then press the Start/Stop button. The unit will then take over control of your camera, and make exposures as per the program parameters you just entered. An audible signal and LED are also nice ammenities that this unit offers.
For long exposures without using the timer functionality of the unit, use the camera settings shown above, and press and hold the button marked HOLD. Release the button when you wish to complete your exposure. For extra long exposures, the HOLD button offers a lock feature so your thumb does not get tired or go numb. Just push the HOLD button upward toward the digital display, and it will lock in place. Push the button back to it's original position when you wish to complete your exposure.
Enjoy!

I have this unit since a week and I think it's great. The TR-M Timer Remote Control for Nikon D90 control is an intervalometer, ie, a device that counts intervals of time. Specifically, it is a digital timer designed to trigger a camera shutter periodically at specified time periods. This timer allows you to do time-lapse photography, and also allows you easier and more precise control with long exposures (bulb). It also functions as a basic remote if you want to keep your hands off the camera while shooting from a tripod. There are four timer options that can be configured on the TR-M Timer Remote Control:
-- Self Timer: This counts down the specified period before it starts taking any action. Used by itself, this provides functionality to take a single photo after a specified time period.
-- Interval Timer: This will actuate the shutter repeatedly at the specified period or interval. The number of iterations is determined by the Number of Frames setting, and if the Number of Frames is set to "--", the TR-M will continue to actuate the shutter at the Interval Timer until it is stopped.
-- Long Exposure Timer: If the camera is in Bulb mode, the long exposure timer will hold the shutter open for the specified period.
-- Number of Frames: This specifies the number of shutter actuations that the TR-M will perform once it is put into play mode (0-399). When set to zero or "--", the Nikos will continue to actuate the shutter at the Interval Timer until it is stopped.
In other words, you can delay the starting moment, manage exposure time, set shooting interval or organize numbers of shots. The TR-M is provided with a cable that allows you to control camera shutter up to 1.0 mt. (3.28 ft) away and a two standard AAA batteries wich are very easy to insert and remove. The design is perfect. It's a comfortable size to hold, and not easy to lose. It's made out of plastic, well built and solid, but not overly heavy, even with batteries inside. One major difference with some similar products is the fact that the TR-M has a "Power Button". Once batteries are inserted, you turn the power button on and the device powers up, ready for use.
There is a LIGHT/LOCK button. This button serves 2 purposes. Pressing this will turn on the backlight for the LCD so you can see in dark situations. The light automatically turns itself off. Holding the LIGHT/LOCK button will lock the remote so that accidental button presses won't effect it. Holding the button down again will unlock the remote. Last and well, least, is the SOUND setting.. Basically you can have the remote beep to let you know when it's going to take a pic, or not. And that's basically it to the settings.
The people at the Satechi Customer Service are great. I bought my control in Argentina and they send it to me in just 5 commercial days. So... international shippings works great. Plus... some days ago they sand me a mail asking me if I was happy with the control and if there was something else they can do for me. Amazing.
In sum... I think the The TR-M Timer Remote Control it's great, and I don't see any need to spend more on the official Nikon/Canon Timer Remotes when you can buy similar products like this. From my point of view you can save the money for those other camera items where you actually do get what you pay for.

As a Amazon Prime user, I hate buying things not offered by Amazon because usually it takes forever! But I received my item in only a few days, and it was perfect. Easy to use, and overall a great product and service from the seller. Im using it for time lapse photography for my D90. Don't hesitate, THIS IS the remote you want.

Everything went as expected with this purchase. The product was delivered promptly and performed as advertised. The directions for use could be a little clearer, but a bit of trial and error was no problem. I need to say one thing: this is the only time in my life that a company contacted me after the sale to see if I was happy. These guys need all the support we can give them because they have the right idea. Customer service is a lost art except at Satechi. Next time I need something I will check with Satechi first.

I recently received this timer. It is a reasonably solidly built device with a nice feature set, and, of course, it comes at a very attractive price.
It works as a remote control (duplicating the Nikon's shutter button), and as a timing device, allowing you to set the delay before the first image of a series, the interval between successive images of the series, and the duration of each shot (if the camera is in 'bulb' mode), all with a 1-second precision, and out to 100 hours. The number of images can be set to any number between 1 and 399, or infinity. The individual features are easily selected, and the device works exactly as advertised. It is supplied in a professionally-made box and comes with two AAA batteries (the ones mine came with were dead, though). My TR-M came with a sticker on the box asserting that the unit is now GP1-compatible.
On the down side, I have some concerns about the relatively low quality housing (mine works, but I just wonder how long it will!), and the absence of some sort of case or bag for it. This would have been an inexpensive addition which would have made it easier to store it. Also, the connector to the Nikon D90 looks and feels very fragile. Given that the Nikon port is proprietary, this may turn out to be a weak spot of this device.
Overall, I like this little machine, and plan to use it extensively for time lapse photography.
