 "Nikon continues to be # 1" 2010-04-03

By WJO (Florida)

I read all of these reviews before going shopping for this camera. The movie option is something I frequently use. The noise complaints worried me so I visited several stores and tried to find out what they were talking about. I could not find one camera with this noise problem. I brought it home, recorded a movie in a closed room, downloaded it to my computer, cranked up the sound, and still did not detect any noise that I've seen described in these reviews. The only noise I could come up with was a snoring dog from across the room. I have taken movies & photos of every type, from every angle, in every environment and under every lighting condition possible. I love this camera!! It's small but very comfortable to use and perfect for dropping into a pocket or purse. I don't like missing great photo opportunities so I like my camera handy at all times. I highly recommend it.

"Great Specs - Poor Performance" 2010-03-31

By Markel Phelps

I recently purchased the Nikon S8000 through another retailer in the hopes of utilizing a more compact camera system for an upcoming family vacation. I currently have a Pentax K-7 camera system with three lenses and love it. However, as great as a the K-7 is, it is a little impractical to use when going to an amusement park with the family. Thus it seemed that the Nikon S8000 would be a perfect solution to take great snapshots of our family vacation in Florida.

Thankfully, I did a good going over with this camera, testing its capabilities and picture quality, using various settings and situations. What I found was that the Nikon name doesn't mean squat when it comes to compact digital cameras. I was somewhat skiddish with this camera to begin with, as it touts a robust 14 megapixel imaging sensor, a CCD sensor, which can only lead to a sure problem - digital noise. I guess I was hoping Nikon had developed a CCD sensor that could compensate for the noise problem, like that of the Fujifilm EXR technology digital cameras that have just recently come out. But to my disappointment, it was to no avail. But, to further complicate matters, the camera as been programed by Nikon engineers to do a lot of heavey noise suppresion, but that in turn causes the pictures to lose quite a bit of detail. This really rears its ugly head when you may want to crop a picture taken with the Nikon S8000. The noise compensation programing done with this camera causes many of the pictures to come out with mushy details. Yes, if you use the lower ISO settings this can be reduced somewhat, but not very well. To compound matters, if you choose to crop any of the pictures taken with this camera, the noise and mush become that much more magnified.

Don't get me wrong, there a some things to like about this camera. The 921k LCD screen for viewing and composing your pictures is wonderful. The 10X Nikkor lens (30-300mm# is great for taking picture without the hassle of changing lenses everytime you turnaround. The playback and editing of images taken on this camera works seemlessly. Even the tackful feel of the rubberized grip area was a nice touch. But if a well designed camera can't pass muster in the image quality department, what do you really have in a camera? Survey says... Nothing!

Since I have now returned the Nikon S8000, I am now trying out two other recent entries that seem to be a little more promising: The Sony HX5v and the Casio EX-FH100). Neither one of these cameras use a CCD sensor for capturing images, but rather, a CMOS type sensors which helps, but does not totally eliminate, the digital noise issue that has long plagued the point and shoot compact camera market. I am not trying to be overly critical of Nikon, because they are, no doubt, a leader in the digital SLR market, but work needs to be done to make the Nikon S8000 camera a worthy travel companion camera.

 "Nikon Coolpix S8000" 2010-03-24

By

I purchased this camera on 3/12/2010 and have only used it sparingly since I have other cameras.

I used it for taping a live show on 3/22 (recorded about 2 hours of stuff.

Last night when I went to use it, the lens cover/protector would not open or close all the way.

I was still able to take pictures, but sometimes you will get blockage from the cover.

Overall, the camera is not too bad.

I do not like the pop up flash because that is usually where I hold the camera to take a picture.

When recording a movie, after you reach the 30 minute max, it takes a while to write to the card.

I stil have the Nikon S700, and on that one, you just hit stop and start and you will not miss recording anything. On this camera, it takes a few minutes before it finishes writing before you can record again.

"I'm not disappointed at all. Perfect pocket camera!" 2010-03-24

By Karen L. Sandoval (New Berlin, WI United States)

I shoot with a d300 mainly, doing floral, macro and actually, whatever tickles my fancy. When I read the review of this camera pre-release, I wanted it immediately. The focal length is perfect: 30-300mm. I can slip this little sweetheart into my pocket and have a quality camera at the ready when carrying a dslr around my neck wouldn't be an option. Seriously, I like it so well that I am considering taking it with me for our tropical vacation and leaving the d300 at home. The d300 really is a beast to travel with when you add a few lenses, even though once I am there -wherever- I am glad I have it along. This will be the true test for me, going to a photographers heaven with just the s8000. I did use it quite a bit on our last trip to Albuquerque, and loved it.

[...]

on this link above you'll see a wide range of focal lengths, I was totally impressed with the ability of the s8000 to pull the top of the Sandia mountain in clearly.

This little beauty will never replace my dslr, but it is sure nice to have in my purse at family get togethers where having a dslr along is just a hassle and to me seems so intrusive when taking candid photos.

I haven't tried the video portion of the camera, so I can't comment on the noise. Generally I pull out my Flip when I want to shoot video anyway.

You won't be disappointed in this camera :)

 "A compact alternative" 2010-03-23

By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)

I own two DSLRs and was looking for a compact digital camera to take with me when taking a DSLR is not convenience.

I have conducted researches on other brands (Panasonic and FujiFilm), and finally decided on this camera. One of the major factors causing me to make this decision is its relatively fast shutter lag, and fast start up. The crystal clear 920,000 dots LCD, 10X zoom and VR lenses are the added bonus and again, impressive for a camera of such size.

The image quality is very good, and even on all auto mode, it performs very well. It is also performing relative well under a low light situation. This camera has good ISO performance up to 800. This is good enough for situation where there is enough light (e.g., indoor or museum). In a setting where light is dimmed, e.g., a church, you might need to crank the ISO to 1600. At that level, you will see quite a bit of noise.

One other very impressive thing is its ability to take macro pictures. I can take a really close up shot (a couple of inches from the object). This camera is quite easy to use with various fancy and fun setting options.

In conclusion, it performs quite well in a low light situation but will struggle in a dimmed light environment unless you increase the ISO. Nonetheless, whether you buy this as a main camera, or as a "take-around" camera when you don't want to bring a DSLR everywhere, this camera is a pretty good choice.
